The particular Miracle As well as the Brain: Idols.

In this number of articles, we have been discussing specialness and more specifically spiritual specialness since it has become a prevalent form in the Course community. Like all types of specialness, spiritual specialness is just a defense of the ego (against the opposite). It maintains the separation in the mind whilst the spiritual basis for differences. In this fifth article, we’re going to bring the discussion around to idols since it is supposed in A Course in Miracles (ACIM).

You’ll recall from the fourth article on fragmentation, we are trying to become conscious of when we are choosing the ego (Ken Wapnick) as the ego is the the main mind that believes in division (T-5.V.3). Idols should warrant consideration and learning because they are ego:

Idol is the symbol of the substitution of the ego for the true Self or god; a false belief that there can be something besides, or maybe more than God, and thus separate from Him, a belief which will be then projected onto the special relationship: people, things or ideas (Glossary-Index for A Course in Miracles, Kindle location 550).

This can be a answer to every problem which will confront you. Nowadays, you think you’re sustained by everything but God. Your faith is placed in the most trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the “right” people, and an endless list of types of nothingness that you endow with magical powers. All these things are your replacements for the Love of God (Lesson 50).

Here within the dream, or illusion, the term symbol definition for “idol” is, “A person or thing that is greatly admired, loved or revered.” Within the last article on fragmentation, we also discussed how spiritually special Course teachers are cult leaders and the term symbol definition for a “cult” which most do not consider is, “A misplaced or excessive admiration for a certain person or thing.” All of these symbols point out a similar thing: Specialness in all its forms are idols meant to replace the Love of God and maintain the separation in the mind.

Throughout this series we’ve also described spiritual specialness as caring who they share the stage or limelight with, i.e., the special relationship and teaching their very own ego version of the truth. Pun intended on that one: Let’s finish setting the stage with this discussion with the next quote from still another author:

Everybody is looking for and express their truth¬†a course in miracles. Their so-called the fact is actually designed to keep them stuck where they are. What J is teaching in his Course is that the simple truth is not different for everyone. It is not relative. He’s saying the simple truth is the truth whether you recognize and trust it or not. The truth is not subject to your interpretation, and neither is his Course. He’s the Teacher, you’re the student. If that’s false, then why do the Course? (The Disappearance of the Universe, Gary Renard, page 92).

Idols of Specialness

Kenneth Wapnick is known for saying that the Course is not for those who believe they’re “spiritual giants” which spiritual specialness believes. Spiritual giants use the first law of chaos: The truth is different for everyone (T-23.II.2) which will be what Renard’s quote is pointing us toward understanding. This can not be said enough: Spiritually special “giants” teach their ego interpretation of the truth, i.e., a number of types of idols meant to replace God’s Love and maintain the separation. If this is actually the heart of the problem, then it’s probably recommended to really want to appreciate this so you can learn when you’re choosing an idol, i.e., the ego.

The practical application of the Holy Spirit’s purpose is very simple, but it is unequivocal. In fact, to be able to be simple it must be unequivocal (T-17.Vi.1:1-2). Jesus keeps saying that this is a quite simple course… why it is simple: It’s unequivocal. You will find not two various ways of interpreting this course. The Course is what it is. It says what it says. It doesn’t say different items to different people (Rules for Decision, Kenneth Wapnick).

Yet, this really is precisely what spiritually special Course teachers as cult leaders are doing! Wapnick makes a really valid point that will help us understand when we are choosing an idol of specialness:

Have Jesus beside you in the illusion (and notice it says Jesus and not a spiritually special Course teacher) but don’t keep it that way. Don’t keep bringing Him in to the illusion. You intend to figure out how to go where He is (Kenneth Wapnick, parenthesis addition mine).

Therefore, it is imperative that you will be trying to the Holy Spirit in place of an idol to teach you. What that means is first, idols are our own types of specialness which we all act out within our lives in some manner or another. However, this includes not projecting our specialness desires onto others by not picking a spiritually special Course teacher as a cult special idol thereby making that form of ego into an alternative to the Holy Spirit as our teacher which will be exactly the same as an alternative for God’s Love.

Consider it. Cult leaders or the spiritually special do not believe laws apply to them whether they’re breaking them outright or merely skirting the edges. History is filled up with examples. In fact, they don’t even think ethics connect with them. They are outside everything as they are “giants” chosen by God to complete his work whether as leaders or group members. If you choose to endorse their specialness, you choose specialness yourself because we are most of the same. It’s incorrect joining since it brings together what’s first considered to be separate but isn’t really separate in reality. Belief in separation is reinforced, i.e., fragmentation is made to appear real which divides the Sonship. There’s no other reason on the degree of the mind for why some are “in” the group and others are “out.”

Hence, the dream is a dream of devastation built to conceal love and usurp God (Echoes of Eternity video on YouTube, Kenneth Wapnick). Therefore, it can not be kind to ourselves or these spiritually special Course teachers to keep choosing idols of specialness to replace God’s Love whether we are joining inside their dream of specialness or making our own. There’s no difference.
